Now that you’ve decided to start an online freelance writing career, it’s time to draft a killer query or cover letter and start applying for work. Several online job boards regularly feature great freelance writing opportunities. Since online writing is very competitive, beginner writers must go the extra mile to get their resume and query noticed.
1. Write a Good Query Letter
Editors want to ensure that a particular topic or subject matter meets their current needs list before assigning or accepting an article. Several online magazines and publications accept articles “on spec.” On the other hand, quite a few online publications prefer a detailed query letter that outlines your idea and provides information on sources and article direction. Good query letters are less than two paragraphs and should “hook” the editor.
