Start Living A Richer Life Today By Overcoming Procrastination
Posted on April 16, 2008 - Filed Under Self Improvement
Now before we go into our main topic of how to live a richer life by just overcoming procrastination, I have a few important questions for you.
- Do you often miss deadlines? If so, what would you do about that?
- Are you someone who tends to get something done or just try to find some “reasons” why you can’t get started?
- When you can’t finish a project, is there a really valid reason for that?
- Is finishing a job on time important to you?
- Do you have plans on how to complete a project when you first got it?
Now, please! I have said this a lot of times and trust me I will keep repeating it until I managed to drill this very important success concept into your mind.
Don’t push all the blames of your failures on external circumstances and people around you. No one but yourself is to be held responsible for everything that happens to you.
Therefore, when you hear yourself starting to make excuses for anything that doesn’t go your way please remember to include yourself inside all your excuses.
“It takes less time to do a thing right than explain why you did it wrong.”
~~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ~~
How true! Why bother wasting your precious time thinking of creative “reasons” why you fail in your projects while you can make use of that time to
What you see in yourself actually holds the very important key to you being successful and in your ability to overcome procrastination.
- Are you always victimized by external events and circumstances?
- Are others always to be blamed for your failures? Is it because of their lack of understanding, insincerity etc that cause you to stop dead in your tracks?
- Do you see yourself as someone who is able to finish what he started or as someone who gives up halfway?
- Are you someone of great determination to change for the better?
- Are you constantly on the search of the hidden causes of your procrastination that you will need to uncover?
Most of the procrastinators I know of are pretty good at finding valid “reasons” why they can’t follow through the project or why they can’t get started. Sometimes, their “reasons” become so valid that even I do not know how to reply them!
Thus I have come to a conclusion that I will no longer listen to any reasons or excuses for procrastination. Whether you are able to overcome procrastination or not is your choice.
It is your choice to get started and it is your choice to follow through what you have started. Of course, failures happen. However, that shouldn’t stop you from achieving what you want and what you desire.
Like what I always tell others, there are no failures in life, only temporary defeat. It is all up to you to use those defeats to your advantage.
Learn to get something out from your temporary defeat. Ask yourself the correct questions for that it is from them that you get quality answers.
- What can I learn from this experience?
- Are the other necessary skills or knowledge that I need to acquire?
- What could have been done differently to produce a better outcome?
By asking quality questions, you will gradually gain back the control of your life and thus help you in your quest to overcome procrastination.
Also, identify the projects and tasks that require your immediate actions and tasks you know that can wait.
However, do keep your lists in check. If possible, have your list verified by other colleagues.
And whenever you hold the thought of wanting to delay a project or task, ask yourself these questions:
- Do I get anything useful from delaying this project?
- What reasons do I have in postponing this project? Are my reasons really valid and justifiable or are they just excuses for me to procrastinate?
- What consequences do I need to bear if I procrastinate and delay completing the task? Am I prepared to suffer those consequences?
Always put your reasons under a microscope. Procrastinators are pretty good at churning out good excuses which looks and sound like a valid reasons and that is why they never seem to be able to overcome procrastination.
Don’t be like them. Be truthful to yourself for the correct truth will always set you free.
“Do not wait. The time will never be just right.”
~~ Napoleon Hill ~~
