Father Really Knew Best - The Kid Can Do It!
Posted on March 4, 2008 - Filed Under Self Improvement
Whether it’s running behind the bike as we learn to manage without training wheels or standing by our side as we make a lifelong commitment to a new life partner, our fathers are there to offer support and encouragement as we master new skills and experiment with life.
So, let’s raise a glass or a picnic plate full of good vittles to the FATHER in our lives. Here are the qualities I cherish as a result of my dad.
F is for… Following my heart. For a long time, I exclusively used to “think” in order to decide the “best” or “smartest” course in most things. Nothing wrong with that to a degree. But when I fully trusted my heart and let it work in partnership with my mind, the good stuff really started to happen.
A is for… Amazement in the possibilities and all that there is out there for us to see and try. It’s so important to slow down and fully explore the wonder of the natural world, and to appreciate the many different people and places that populate our environments.
T is for… Tenacity to stick it out for what we truly want or what we believe to be right. If I’d thrown up my hands when faced with the hard part of learning new things, jobs or technology, I’d never enjoy the interesting career I’m engaged in now. If I’d given up too quickly when faced with stresses of physical distance and occasional misunderstanding, I wouldn’t have the great number of friends I enjoy and my new marriage.
H is for… Horizon and whatever comes next. Although I live firmly in the here and now, and I am continually enticed and optimistic about what tomorrow will bring. I’m naturally curious, and I love to travel… literally and metaphorically. “What if?” is one of my favorite questions.
E is for… Embrace challenges that come with a full life. Stretching myself professionally, cultivating and maintaining close relationships, and exploring possibilities sometimes lead to struggle. But every challenge is an opportunity for growth and greater expression of who I can be.
R is for… Reinventing myself as I learn and experience new things. We all crave certain constants in our lives; our loved ones, familiar surroundings, and general comfort. But I choose to be resilient and know that no matter what happens, I’ll evolve and adapt and enjoy what comes next.
Life is an adventure to be experienced to the fullest. Remember your father and all the others in your life who’ve cheered you on, and go for it!
