Thousands of people all around the world are trying to reel in targeted traffic so that their website can prosper and live on. Lets face it, if you have a deserted web site, you have a dead web site. In a lot of ways, a website is like a plant. It needs attention and care in order for it to grow and thrive in its environment, which in this case is the World Wide Web. Therefore, the million dollar question is; how does a webmaster reel in large amounts of traffic and keep a website alive and healthy?
Basically, the answer to that question is “hard work” and lots of planning. There are plenty of techniques and traffic driving methods, but you only have so much time. If you try to tackle everything at once, you won’t last long because you will be quickly overwhelmed. Then again, if you work too slowly and fail to diversify your efforts, you won’t get results fast enough. As you can see, traffic generation really boils down to a balancing act between your time and your work load.
You may be wondering about some of the techniques that are be used to “reel” in visitors. Well, you’ve heard the plant analogy, now here is the fishing analogy:
Think of the internet as a gigantic ocean filled with billions and billions of different fish (internet users). In order to catch some of those fish and get them into your boat (website) you are going to have to use the right type of bait . Some fish will take any type of bait that they see, while others will only be attracted to certain forms of bait. Your job is to find out what that bait is and start making it even more potent. If the type of fish that you want to catch only goes after a certain type of bait, then you need to focus on using more of that bait.
Understand? No? Well, then here is a explanation in layman’s terms: the webmaster has to know who the target audience is and appeal to their overall wants and/or needs. If he can pinpoint the target audiences’ feelings and emotions (which is the hard part), then he can reel them into his site very easily. Evoking a person’s emotion and making them feel as though they “absolutely” must visit the website is a full proof method of acquiring free traffic hits.
If you know who your target audience is, then here are a few questions you may want to ask yourself.

What type of information do they need/want?
What products are they willing to buy?
Is the topic a serious issue? Is is a health issue?
With regards to the severity of the topic, would they be more likely to read Ebooks (packed with info) or read through a number of articles (short but sweet)?
Are they looking for free information with no intention of paying or are they desperate to solve their problem and feel that money isn’t an issue?
Is your audience seasonal? Will they be more active during one season than another? (Grills, Camping, Beach Vacations, Cruises= Summer) (Sledding, Snow Tires, Flu & Cold Symptoms, Heaters, Snow Jackets, Skiing= Winter)

In conclusion, it is not terribly difficult to target web site traffic and reel it in. You just have to know your audience, have a good plan, and take action. By using & testing different techniques, you will be able to maximize web site traffic within just a few weeks. Of course, if you do nothing, nothing is what you will eventually wind up with. Be smart, use your head, and get to work!
