Government Grants For Small Business

Posted on February 15, 2008 - Filed Under Business

There is a lot of talk, gossip, and speculation about whether the U.S. Federal Government directly gives away free government cash grants to small businesses. The answer is, unfortunately, no and there are many good reasons why.

The U.S. government cannot evaluate and process every grant request from all the small businesses that want free funding. However, it is a fact that grant funding is available for many small businesses and entrepreneurs. The question is where to find them.

The average person seeking a raise would not go to the chairman of the board of the company they work for. Instead, most people would go to their immediate supervisor to request a raise. The granting process is much the same when you look at the “trickle down effect”. Congress allocates funds for specific projects that then are reallocated to smaller projects that then are allocated to individual groups. If this sounds complicated, it often is.

While researching a specific grant funding program recently I accidentally came across funding available for a project needed for the Department of Defense (DOD) under the authority of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the Information Exploitation Office (IXO) for the research of “Getting Situation Data Into the Head of the Busy Warfighter”. That may not be what the average person seeking free government business grants is looking for, but that is the maze that they need to navigate to find the appropriate funding source.

Finding sources of government grant funding is not all that difficult, you just need to know where to look for a particular grant. Like the ripples from a pebble tossed into a pond, the most immediate and closest sources are the best route. Then you would work out from there to encompass more areas as the need be. This process can be time consuming and frustrating.

The dream of owning and operating your own business is the true American dream, but achieving a grant to help you start out should not be attempted alone. There are many good grant writing programs available to assist you in your quest to achieve financial freedom and a new start in life for you and your family.
